From Landscape to Song —
An exhibition and workshop by artist and poet Natsumi Seo will be held at Meet & Make, an alternative art space in Busan. Since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Seo has created works based on oral accounts of memories of disasters, local histories, and the life stories of ordinary people. In recent years, her research has expanded beyond disasters to the modern and contemporary history of Asia, and she continues to create while traveling to different places.
Under the theme of “stories rooted in the land, the loss of landscapes, and recovery from that loss,” the exhibition will present around 30 works, including paintings, poetry, and stories. Centered on the Double Layered Town series, which grew out of reconstruction following the Great East Japan Earthquake, the exhibition brings together works created by listening to the voices of places in Hiroshima, Okinawa, Noto, and Tokyo in Japan, as well as the Marshall Islands and other locations overseas, with new works that emerged from Seo’s stay in Busan last year.

Workshop: “Listening to Someone’s Memories, Making Words and Pictures”
This workshop invites participants to listen to someone’s story and express it through writing and drawing. Participants will receive and give form to someone’s story—whether it belongs to a person living in this city, someone close to them, themselves, or someone they happen to meet. The workshop draws on methods that Natsumi Seo has practiced in various places.
① Oral History Workshop + Drawing: Participants will pair up and take turns listening to and recording each other’s stories. They will then try drawing with guidance from Seo.
Between sessions ① and ②: Building on the approach introduced in the first session, participants will interview someone, such as an acquaintance or family member, and create their own work based on that person’s story. The form of presentation is not limited to drawing or painting.
② Presentations: Each participant will present their work, followed by a group discussion.
Dates and times: ① November 7, 2026 (Sat), 2:00–4:00 p.m. ② November 14, 2026 (Sat), 2:00–4:00 p.m.
Venue: Meet & Make
